Willie Owens has been selected as Burroughs' new athletic director, effective July 1.
Willie currently serves as AD at Sandia Prep in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he has worked in various capacities for the past three decades. There, he oversees 70 coaches leading 56 girls and boys teams in 23 sports. He has coached track, soccer, golf, and, most notably, basketball. As the head boys basketball coach from 1994 to 2017, he guided the team to nearly 400 wins, five district championships, two regional championships, and six consecutive state semifinal games. In recent years, Sandia has won state titles in girls and boys soccer, girls track and field, dance, and girls and boys cross country.
Willie has earned plenty of accolades of his own throughout his career at Sandia Prep. Most recently, he was inducted into the New Mexico High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor — the association’s highest honor — and also received the NMHSCA’s Coaching for Character Award (2022). Throughout his career, Willie has demonstrated an incredible ability to build strong relationships within his school community and mentor student-athletes (both on the field and off). Be sure to check out this video to hear what some of Willie's longtime colleagues had to say about him upon his induction into the New Mexico High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
“Being an athletic director and having the opportunity to champion character in young men and women is a calling,” Willie says. “Burroughs is the next calling for me, and I am greatly looking forward to this tremendous opportunity.”
A Kansas City native, Willie relocated to Albuquerque in the 1980s to attend the University of New Mexico, where he played football and earned a bachelor’s degree in education. He and his wife, Debbie, have two adult children living in the Midwest.
Willie will continue a succession of beloved athletic directors at Burroughs, including Peter Tasker, who will retire at the end of this school year. Peter came to Burroughs in 2004 and was named athletic director in 2010. Please join us in thanking Peter and welcoming Willie.
