2020-2021 Winter Sports Awards

During assembly on Monday, May 3, AD Peter Tasker congratulated student-athletes who have been honored by the press and various league organizations for their performance in winter sports.

A full listing is posted between Tasker's opening and closing remarks, and a video of Tasker's presentation appears at the end.

Sport. My shorthand for why we play is joy, health and learning great life lessons. I usually talk about the learning great life lessons part. But today I want to talk about the joy part of sport. Focus your mind for a second with me on these moments of joy: the joy of getting out of quarantine, and back to your team; the joy of assisting a teammate on a basket or goal with a beautiful set-up pass; the joy of ripping an across-court shot for a winner; the joy of sticking a 100-yard shot six inches from the cup. The joy of a PR, or perhaps a school record. The joy of delivering a clutch hit. The joy of knowing your teammates have your back, even if you slip up. The joy of long hours of hard work paying off in your quest for mastery. The joy of the embrace of teammates after you’ve left it all out there. The joy of forgetting about schoolwork and problems for a while, and being entirely in the moment. The joy of your parents’ pride in watching you compete. The joy of feeling part of something bigger than self. And the joy of friendships forged through the experience.

You should all know the wonderful joy your coaches, teachers and I have felt, watching you grow through your time here. And all the pain we’ve been feeling the last 12 months? It serves to sharpen our ability to experience joy. For this, let us feel gratitude.

Today, it gives me great joy to honor those who have achieved high mastery of their athletic activities this past winter. Those who have been recognized by the media and local coaching organizations.

We salute you all—our entire student body, those who competed as well as those who supported our teams, our managers, our videographers and our statisticians. I speak for the athletic administration and coaches in saying it is a privilege to be part of your great journey of Bomber sport. As I am fond of reminding, it is not the result of the contest that matters, but what you become in the pursuit of excellence while you chase your greatness. It is overcoming the adversity and the struggle to become your very best that prepares you for life beyond these walls, and to live a life of honor. Congratulations to you all, may you all continue to find joy in the journey. It’s a great day to be a Bomber! Thank you very much.
