2019-2020 Winter Sports Awards

During assembly on Friday, April 3, AD Peter Tasker congratulated student-athletes who have been honored by the press and various league organizations for their participation in winter sports. A full listing is posted between Tasker's opening and closing remarks, and a video of Tasker's presentation appears at the end.

Good morning, I hope everyone and their families are healthy. Today we honor our winter sports award recipients. I am reminded every day that I have the privilege of watching our student body compete with the courage it takes to walk into the crucible of competition. When I talk to those unfamiliar with our athletic program, I love to tell them that an overarching goal of ours is to keep kids in athletics. I am trying to imagine saying to a Geometry student that their grade was a bit low after two weeks and that we have to cut them from Geometry class. Of course, we do not do that, because we feel that geometry, and math, are essential to the healthy development of every one of our students. Well, we feel the same about the athletic team journey: if we are good stewards of the journey, the growth that takes place is fundamental to the process of forming our students to best be prepared for life outside of the Burroughs walls.

I think about your growth in courage. You put it all on the line when you compete, which is the same as when you walk on the stage for a theatrical show, a concert, a debate or art exhibition. You push yourself in practice or rehearsal, you do the extra sprints, mountains, gassers, sideboards, crunches, reps, film sessions, you push your body to exhaustion, you experience new levels of pain and suffering, you risk injury, defeat, disappointing others, ridicule and humiliation. You grow every day that you participate, and you grow in courage with every repetition. You are built for the challenges that lie ahead. Much growth awaits you, but you are already on the great path, and may your courage see you through to the other side. We believe in each and every one of you. We have been privileged to watch you blossom, and we are awed by watching you show such wonderful promise of surpassing the adults who have mentored you. Courage. It is in each and every one of you. Thank you for showing people like me what it looks like, and to remind all of us that we need to continue to strive for growth in this area ourselves. Now, more than ever, we need your courage.

It now gives me great joy to honor those who have achieved high mastery of their athletic activities of this past winter, those have been recognized by the media, and local coaching organizations: …. First up!

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Ann Zhang is our St. Louis Post Dispatch Scholar-Athlete of the Year!

We salute you all, our entire student body, those who competed with honor, as well as those who supported our teams, our managers, our videographers and statisticians. I speak for the athletic administration and coaches in saying, it is a privilege to be part of your great journey of Bomber sport. And, as I am fond of reminding, it is not the result of a contest that matters, but what you become in the pursuit of excellence. It is overcoming the adversity, and the struggle to be your very best that prepares you for life beyond the momentarily virtual walls of this venerable institution. Congratulations to you all. It is indeed a great day to shelter in place as a Bomber. I know you all will continue to find your courage. Thank you!
