Announcements
*AMC 10-12 Test
: This individual, nationwide math competition will be given at Burroughs on Tuesday, November 16, starting before school and running through 1st period. Students taking a geometry class or higher are eligible. See Mr. Taff before the end of October if you need more information or would like to sign up.
*Dance Show: The Dance Show happens every winter, and showcases about 30 dances of varying styles and difficulty levels. It’s student-managed, costumed, choreographed and teched. It’s open to everyone, and it counts as a winter sport, but also shares a season with the musical—so you can’t do both. Rehearsals are held in the dance studio and begin right after school on Monday, October 25. If you’re interested, you can just show up. There’s also a sign-up sheet outside Mme. Kinney’s classroom (103). Those who’d like to choreograph, or seniors who want to be part of the leadership team, should attend a meeting in Mme. Kinney’s room at 8 am on Wednesday, October 20. Make sure you finalize your choreography and music ideas over the long weekend. For more information or questions, reach out to Mme. Kinney.
*Hispanic Culture Club: Club leaders Isabel Cepeda ’24, Cece Fernandez ’23 and Maisie Zipfel ’24 introduced themselves and spoke about Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through October 15. They also spoke about the food, art and cultures of the countries their families come from: Colombia (Isabel), Cuba (Maisie) and Argentina (Cece). There will be a club meeting on Thursday, October 22 in Sra. Cohen’s room (101). All are welcome.
*Mental Health Awareness: Mental Health Awareness Day was Sunday, October 10, and Olivia Acree ‘23 and Ella Deutsch ’25 spoke about the importance of staying aware of our own, and other’s, mental well-being. The warning signs that someone is struggling with their mental health can include self-isolation, increased use of substances, eating or sleeping less or more than usual, and fatigue. As many as 46 percent of all Americans struggle with their mental health at some point during their lives. If students are feeling like they need support, or notice friends struggling, they are encouraged to reach out to a trusted adult including teachers, advisors or a JBS counselor.
*Montgomery Plan Activities: The Chouteau Island trash pick-up is tomorrow. You can still sign up on the MP Canvas page. There will not be a bus. Sara Cao ’22 and Molly O’Brien ’22 spoke about the Montgomery Plan partnership with KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now), a nonprofit providing free, noncompetitive recreational opportunities for people with disabilities between the ages of 5 and 21. MP is currently seeking volunteers to help with KEEN’s Halloween carnival, which will run 12:30-2:30 pm on Sunday, October 31 at the Saint Louis University field house. Volunteers must be vaccinated and masked. For more information, reach out to Molly or Sara, or look for the sign-up sheet that will be emailed over the long weekend.
*Sixth Man Club: Last week’s fan of the week was Mawdo Diallo ‘26. This week’s game is the soccer match against DeSmet at 4 pm tomorrow. The theme is “dads.” Fans wanted.
