Tuition & Affordability
Our admission decisions are made prior to decisions concerning tuition aid. The deliberate separation of the two decisions yields the most well-qualified students. As a result, every year, more than an entire grade level of our students receive loans, grants, or a package of loans and grants. For the 2023-24 school year, approximately 25% of our students have collectively been awarded more than $4.1 million.
Tuition aid forms for current families and grade 9 applications are due on January 4, 2024. Grade 7 applicants should apply for aid by February 5, 2024. Although admission and aid decisions are separate, we must have a sense of how much aid is being requested before finalizing our annual operating budget. Once a student has been accepted, we make every effort to meet their tuition needs based on the information provided via our forms; however, aid is not guaranteed and that is especially true if aid applications are submitted after our deadlines have passed because our aid is largely allocated by March.
Aid is awarded based on need and our tuition assistance program has grown substantially in part because of the generosity of many in our school community. For example, in 1989 our tuition aid allocation was $495,000 for 110 recipients (19.8% of our student body). Our tuition aid grants are funded through a combination of investment income from endowed scholarships and our general operating budget. Recipients of grants from endowed scholarships are invited to write a short note of gratitude to the donor of their scholarships each year. This exchange sometimes results in friendships that endure beyond Burroughs.
Tuition for the 2023-2024 school year is $34,700. Other charges — for books, supplemental classroom materials, athletic teams, and field trips — can cost more than an additional $1,000 per year. Tuition for the 2024-2025 school year will be set in January 2024.
Our policies and process regarding tuition aid are set forth below. Please contact Meridith Thorpe with any questions. This process is confidential.
