Classics

A Latin teacher lectures to students in the classroom.

Classics studies traditionally embrace the languages and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome.

Our Classics Department uses the "inductive" or "reading-based" approach adopted by the Oxford Latin Course in the teaching of Latin. Students learn the language in its proper historical and social context by reading narrative passages of increasing complexity. They are exposed to the works of Cicero and Livy (Level III) and Catullus, Horace and Vergil (Levels IV and V). Ancient Greek is taught along traditional lines but with additional emphasis on the cultural context.
