To you, the parent
| John Burroughs School was founded
by parents, and this fact is reflected in its governance structure.
Only parents of Burroughs students are members of the John Burroughs
Association. Members elect the school's Board of Trustees at
the annual meeting of the Association in May. |
"For
me-and for my children
who attended Burroughs - it
was the single most positive
life-changing educational
experience of all."
Mike McCarthy, JBS '57

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees supervises operations and determines policies
to be implemented by the headmaster, principals, faculty, and
staff. The school by-laws require that most of the Board members
be current Burroughs parents.
The Parents' Council
All parents of students attending Burroughs are members of the
Parents' Council which supports the school through fund-raising
events and countless volunteer hours.
School Finances and Annual Giving
As an independent non-profit organization, Burroughs depends
primarily on tuition and fees to cover operating expenses. A
second major source of income is Annual Giving, which is supported
by parents, alumni, and friends of the school. Each year, about
96 percent of the parents contribute to Annual Giving. A third
major source of income is the school's $40 million endowment
fund.
The school is financially sound. Budget control is supervised
closely by the administration and trustees.
Financial Aid
No family should fail to apply for admission because of limited
finances. The school's financial aid program is designed to assist
as many families as possible in sending their children to John
Burroughs School. Admission decisions are made prior to, and
separate from, financial aid decisions.
Approximately $950,000 is awarded annually to families demonstrating
financial need. Close to 20 percent of the students receive financial
aid, with the average award being about $8,400. All tuition aid
is renewable annually. No academic, athletic, or artistic scholarships
are awarded. |
