The Faculty

"No question in my mind that
the faculty here is a standout.
That is probably one of the main
features that would attract
anyone to this school."

Valerie Bell
Current Parent

Finding great people who love to teach, love their subjects, and love kids - people who are enthusiastic, warm, and intelligent - is Headmaster Keith Shahan's highest priority. Burroughs teachers write the curriculum, have autonomy in their classes, engage in individualized professional development programs, and are rewarded for excellence in teaching.

The school's operating budget confirms this priority. To attract and retain the best teachers, Burroughs offers the highest salaries in the St. Louis area along with excellent benefits. Seventy-five percent of the school's operating costs cover salaries and benefits for the faculty and staff. In a school committed to excellence, independence, innovation, and growth, Burroughs faculty not only teach but are themselves students of their subjects; they are practicing biologists, classicists, artists, and mathematicians. They are leaders in national professional organizations, and they pursue advanced degrees.

On campus, teachers participate in all aspects of school life and observe students in different settings and relationships. The school fosters these student-teacher relationships in non-classroom settings-on the playing fields, through community service activities, at the family-style lunches, and during study periods.
