"When you come to Burroughs, you don't
just study. You're involved in activities and athletics and the
arts. Each area teaches different lessons. In athletics, it's
about learning to be part of a team, learning to be supportive,
learning to lose well, and learning to win well. We think students
learn things on the playing field that they may not learn in
the classroom."

| All students participate
in physical education/athletics each year. Through participation
in daily physical activity, students experience the inherent
benefits and gain a better understanding of how physical fitness
and athletics contribute to their total health and well-being.
The intention is that students will choose to make physical activity
a part of their lives well beyond their high school years. The
fitness program stresses skill (coordination, agility, power,
balance, speed) as well as health (flexibility, muscular strength,
endurance, and body composition). Athletics also stress skill
development, goal setting, teamwork, courage, competition, and
fun. |
In grades 7 and 8, a 112-hour physical education period, four
days a week, is part of the regular school day. In grades 9 through
12, students compete in after-school sports, either in physical
education classes or as team
members. |
 |
Sports offered to boys in grades 9 through 12
include football, soccer, cross country, water polo, basketball,
swimming, ice hockey, wrestling, indoor soccer, baseball, track,
tennis, and golf. Sports offered to girls include field hockey,
tennis, volleyball, cross country, golf, basketball, dance, racquetball,
softball, track, swimming, soccer, and lacrosse.
