What can I expect of a school day?
The length of the school day is from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Friday. Each morning begins with assembly during which attendance is taken and announcements are made by students, faculty, and administrators. Longer programs include student musical recitals or skits, outside speakers or debates, guest performers, and sound-off time for students and teachers.

What about homework?
Teachers assign homework to fulfill a defined purpose, not to fill a certain amount of time. Work at home varies with the course load and the organization and study skills of the student. On average, students spend two hours each night on homework in grades 7 and 8 and up to 24 hours per week in grades 9 through 12.

And grades?
At Burroughs we want our students to love learning-not to be driven by grades. Seventh and eighth graders receive semester reports which evaluate study habits and knowledge of the material. Faculty advisors meet with parents during the first trimester to discuss student progress. Students in grades 9 through 12 receive letter grades which serve as guidelines for parents and students-and for college admissions. Teacher/parent conferences address the student's progress and future direction.

How does the student government work?
Burroughs gives students a voice in the affairs and direction of the school through student government. Students elect their peers for positions on the Student Congress and Student Court. The Student Congress creates a forum for open discussion of school issues. The Student Court, with justices from grades 8 through 12, hears disciplinary cases and determines the punishment. Cases requiring probation, suspension, or expulsion are referred to the headmaster.

Is there a dress code?
The dress code reflects the school's relaxed atmosphere. The only requirement is that students wear clean apparel in good condition.
