The Arts
As stated by our founders, "The
arts belong not on the decorative fringes of education but close
to the center of it." John Burroughs School's philosophy
is a broad definition of education with the arts, athletics,
and activities playing important roles alongside academics.
Students in grades 7 and 8 take courses in sculpture, painting
and drawing, theatre, speech and debate, music, industrial technology,
and home economics. In the upper grades, they may choose from
a broad range of electives in each of these disciplines.
Most of the courses in the arts meet during regular class periods,
but rehearsals for dramatic and musical performances often require
meetings after school. |
The arts are not at the periphery at Burroughs. They are
an integral part
of our program.

Fine Arts
The fine arts program is classically based and broad in scope.
It often uses material from other disciplines (e.g., poetry,
mathematics, science). Art history is an integral part of the
course. Teachers, all of whom are professional artists, encourage
students to think outside boundaries, exploring their surroundings
and perceptions in ways which depend on strong principles and
which result in fundamentally personal statements.
All Burroughs students take two semesters of painting/drawing
and two semesters of sculpture/ceramics in grades 7 and 8. A
student may continue in the fine arts in grades 9 through 12
from two to five periods per week. |
