What We Do

The counseling department's mission is to support the Burroughs community in the areas of health and wellness, prevention and counseling intervention.

The counseling department's mission is to support the Burroughs community in the areas of health and wellness, prevention and counseling intervention.

The personal counseling department at Burroughs is a multi-faceted program staffed by the department director/counselor, another counselor and a health educator.

The counselors work with all members of the Burroughs community to support the well-being and growth of our students. Helping students sustain healthy relationships within the community is an important part of our mission, along with encouraging our students to make healthy personal choices. At the core, this is a collaborative effort, involving parents, faculty/coaches and the administration.

Advising Coordination

The advising program at Burroughs partners faculty with students to provide a primary communication link for student and parent. It seeks to personalize the JBS experience and to provide a person to whom both student and parent can take questions and problems, from whom they can expect caring, personal and trustworthy assistance.

Counseling Activities

Prevention Services
Through grade-level programming, health classes and school-wide assemblies, we educate our students about a variety of health-related and age-appropriate topics such as internet safety, substance abuse, nutrition, sex education, driving safety and stress management.

Personal Counseling Services
Among the services we are able to offer on campus are diagnostic screening for learning disabilities, attentional issues, depression, anxiety, eating issues and emotional concerns as well as short-term personal counseling for a wide variety of concerns that might be affecting the life of a student.

Parent Support Services
Our work with parents is two-fold. We serve as liaison to the Family Network and its committees to develop and deliver ongoing parent education programs. We are also available to individual parents for consultation and can provide educational, psychiatric and psychological referrals—all on a confidential basis.
