Guidelines for Transcript Recognition

The purpose of the Montgomery Plan is to encourage and recognize the volunteer work done by John Burroughs students. The student will be recognized on his/her JBS transcript (according to the Montgomery Plan Guidelines) as "Voluntary Community Service --____hours."  The focus of the Plan is to serve those in need or the community as a whole through an established agency. Community service is not required at John Burroughs School.

TO RECEIVE TRANSCRIPT RECOGNITION
UNDER THE MONTGOMERY PLAN
:

1. A student must volunteer at least 50 hours of service for a single nonprofit charitable organization in the community outside the school (the service must be unpaid). The minimum of 50 hours must be completed within an 18 month period.

2. The work must be done in the greater St. Louis area.

3. The work must be other than that required of JBS students. (e.g. May Project is not considered under the Montgomery Plan.)

4. The student must have the agency fill out the Montgomery Plan form after the volunteer work is completed. The completed form should be returned to the Montgomery Plan faculty sponsor within 18 months of doing the work. The faculty sponsor will put the form in the student's permanent JBS file. Montgomery Plan forms are available in the receptionist area or from the faculty sponsor.

5. In addition to the many charitable organizations in our area, Montgomery Plan recognition will be given for volunteer work for cultural associations which are accessible to and benefit the broader St. Louis community e.g., the Art Museum, Zoo, Missouri Botanical Garden, etc. plus environmental and political action groups.

6. Work for private individuals, not through charitable organizations such as tutoring a neighbor, helping a veterinarian, or working for a political candidate is not eligible.
