Shahan Heading to ISACS
Dr. Shahan has been named president-elect of ISACS, the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, based in Chicago, IL.
ISACS is the accreditation body for 230 independent schools in 13 states in the Midwest. In addition to overseeing self and peer evaluations of member schools, ISACS provides professional development opportunities and serves as an advocate for independent education.
Dr. Shahan will assume the position July 1, 2009, the day after he retires as head of Burroughs. His 35-year administrative career in education began in the University City School District, where he worked nine years, the last four as principal of University City High School. After three years as upper school head and assistant director at the International School of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and one year as interim head of the Brookside School in Bloomfield Hills, MI, Dr. Shahan came to Burroughs in 1986 as its fifth head of school.
In a letter to the membership, ISACS board chair John Buxton, head of The Culver Academies outside of South Bend, IN, cited the organization's "pleasure in securing someone as professional, well-respected and as fully committed to and familiar with ISACS as Keith Shahan."
In a message to the Burroughs faculty and staff, Dr. Shahan said, "ISACS is an organization I am very familiar with, having led many ISACS visiting teams and having served as treasurer and president of its Board. I am honored to be given this opportunity and glad to be able to continue helping schools and independent education. Marcia and I will be moving to Chicago but will keep our St. Louis base, where we plan to spend plenty of time with our friends and colleagues."
