Montgomery Plan Activities

— filed under:

Food Drive 11Montgomery Plan thanks everybody for the school-wide support of the holiday food drive. In large part due to the many, many Straub’s volunteers and holiday packers, this year's drive collected hundreds of food items. Volunteers delivered them to the Gavin Outreach Center in St. Louis, sorted and shelved the items, and then put together holiday boxes for more than 120 families.

January Means Danna Drive

Next, Montgomery Plan plunges into the Danna Drive, which will benefit Boys Hope/Girls Hope, an agency which provides academic support to children through community-based programs and all-encompassing care in residential programs. To kick off the 2012 Danna Drive, a guest from Boys Hope/Girls Hope spoke at morning assembly on January 10.

Montgomery Plan has organized several activities to support Boys Hope/Girls Hope. The collection point for items from the agency's wish list (see below) is in front of the main office. Students also coordinated a bake sale and dollar drive to raise money to purchase additional items. Volunteers will visit the agency in February or March for a work day.

Boys Hope/Girls Hope Wish List
Urgently Needed Items: aluminum foil/plastic wrap, bath/kitchen towels, dish/hand soap, paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, zip-style storage bags
Needed items: contact lens solution, detergent/laundry soap, feminine pads, school supplies (binders, pencil cases, etc.), toothpaste, canned goods, cereals, Gatorade, granola bars, macaroni and cheese, pasta, peanut butter, salsa

Spring Break Trip to Joplin

Montgomery Plan volunteers will travel to Joplin, Missouri, and work with Rebuild Joplin and Americorps (and perhaps other agencies) to assist with Joplin's ongoing tornado recovery efforts March 18 through 22. Volunteers must be age 14 or older.  Although the exact nature of the work will be determined closer to departure, it will likely include cleanup, outside work, painting, sorting, repair work, computer work, children's activities, meal preparation, etc. The cost of the spring break service trip will be kept to a minimum, but will include nominal housing charges, travel expenses (cost of gas and bus rental), and food expenses. (No trip in the past has cost more than $180 for the 5 days.) Burroughs will make it possible for any student to participate, regardless of his/her ability to pay.

Weekly service opportunities

Montgomery Plan continues to offer these weekly volunteer opportunities:

Wednesdays: Kids Place, tutoring: 3:30 to 5:30 pm. (Contact Susan Dee)

Sundays: Campus Kitchens, meal preparation, 1 to 3 pm (Adults and students are welcome. See Dr. Rick Sandler)
