Bridges Towards Equity & Justice seeks to create an inclusive community by cultivating understanding through communication. We believe that with increased awareness and appreciation of differences and commonalties through conversation, we combat fear and ignorance, the basis of much prejudice. Our quality of life is enhanced when we discover how much we have in common with people and how we can learn from perspectives different from our own. By building trust and forging bonds across those barriers that have divided our society, we hope to find ways to strengthen our community. In short, we become powerful models of self-knowledge and leadership both within and outside of our school community. *This pilot program was created in collaboration with FOCUS St. Louis and patterned after the nationally recognized adult program, Bridges Across Racial Polarization®. The primary difference is that our student groups are formed around various social identifiers in addition to race. We create groups across gender, religion, race and age. We currently have 48 JBS students participating in 5 diverse groups. We also have 8 groups participating in the adult program. Like the student groups, the adult groups were formed with JBS parents. For more information on the adult or student programs at John Burroughs, feel free to contact us at the e-mail address or phone number listed on the bottom of the page.
