OLC III.48: Clauses of fearing

 
 
1. Cleopatra was afraid that the Roman citizens might mock her, having been captured by Octavian.
NB se in the subordinate clause of fearing refers to the subject of the main verb.
 
2. Fearing that civil wars may be renewed again, the Senate begs Octavian not to lay aside his power.
NB deponat is indirect command after orat
 
3. I am afraid that the Roman fleet will not/may not defeat Cleopatra's forces.
NB ut indicates a fear of what will/may not happen
 
4. olim timebas/verebaris/metuebas ne magister te cotidie pulsaret.
 
5. veriti sumus/timuimus/metuimus ne Quintus aliam cenam rapuisset.
 
6. Cleopatra non timet/veretur/metuit ne corpus venenum atrum combibat.
 
7. Quintus metuit/timet/veretur (a) ut Cleopatram Romae videat or (b) ne Cleopatram Romae non videat.
