Boys’ Varsity Basketball

The boys' varsity basketball team had a very productive week as they were able to conclude the week with a four game winning streak.  The Bombers were able to move their current record to 12 wins and 3 losses by defeating John F. Kennedy in a close contest from the tip-off to the final buzzer by the score of 42 - 40 on Monday 1/23.  The squad book ended the week with their best offensive performance of the year against Lutheran North, in which the Bombers defeated the Crusaders 70 - 43.

Conference play continues for the Bombers during this week, they face Principia in a home contest on Tuesday 1/31 at 7pm and MICDS at Washington University on Saturday 2/4 at 8pm.

Boys’ JV Basketball

On Monday, the JV boys’ basketball team hosted Kennedy in a non-conference match-up. The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout, with the Bombers finding themselves down two with 15 seconds left. After a wild scramble, Sam Held stepped up and hit a huge three-pointer to take the lead and the game. Bombers win 42-39!  Henry Rogers and Sachit Bhat led the way in scoring with 18 and 14 points, respectively.

On Wednesday, the JV squad traveled to MICDS to take on their rivals in a rescheduled game from earlier in the year. The two teams traded leads throughout the game with the Rams going into the 4th quarter up five. The Bombers gave great effort until the bitter end, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 45-43. Sachit Bhat had 13 points to lead the team in scoring.

On Friday, the Bombers had yet another wild game when they hosted the Lutheran North Crusaders. The two teams traded baskets and the leads throughout the game, with the Bombers finding themselves down one with 10 seconds left. After a missed free throw by North, Henry Rogers took the ball to the basket for lead, but unfortunately was called for an offensive foul. Bombers lose 56-52. Rogers and Sachit Bhat led the scoring effort with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

This week, the Bombers host two league games. On Tuesday, the Principia Panthers visit the Bomber-dome and on Thursday the Bombers look for revenge against MICDS. Both games will tip-off at 5:30pm.

Boys’ C Basketball

The C basketball team continued their winning ways this week, defeating Lutheran South 37-30, and Lutheran North 54-33. JJ Lister received the game ball for his outstanding defense against South; Liam Meier scored a season high 9 points to earn star of the game honors against North. The C team has now won 6 games in a row and stand atop the conference standings with a record of 5-0. Those records will be on the line next week as they take on three more conference foes.

Girls’ JV Basketball

The JV girls squad opened their week against Villa. The Bombers put the first points on the board with a nice outside jump shot by McCoy Edmonds. A few fast-break mistakes and strong outside shooting by Villa set the Bombers back 15 points going into the second half. The Bombers ended the game strong allowing only 6 points and putting up 6 of their own. McCoy Edmonds finished with 6 points. Ros Shinkle and Sara Botteron both added 5 points, and Mackenzie Geisman contributed 2 points to give the Bombers a 48-18 loss to Villa.

The Bombers then headed to Christian High School, O'Fallon, on Friday. Another strong outside shooting performance by Christian High School helped propel a lopsided first half score. The Bombers broke their full court press well and were able to get high percentage looks at the basket but the shots were just not falling for the Lady Bombers. It was not until the 4th quarter when the Bombers, led by forward McCoy Edmonds, started to make their opportunities count on the offensive end. Edmonds sunk 2 outside shots and drove coast to coast twice for a pair of layups to help fire the Bombers back up! Ros Shinkle added 2 points off a strong move to the basket and Sarah Botteron hit an outside jumper to contribute to a 12 point 4th quarter. The Bombers ended the game strong for the second time this week, proving they never give up. Final Score: Christian High School 33 - JBS 17

Boys’ Wrestling

We have had some strong competition the past two weeks for the wrestling team.  On January 18th we had three dual meets at Whitfield School.  We lost a tight one to St. Clair 39-35.  Zane Norton and Alec Hanselman both won close decisions, winning 6-2 and 8-4. Cory Lester and Jack Grady both had convincing wins by pin. Percy Vanacht won by tech fall 17-2. Principia bested us by a score of 42-25.  Strong performances were turned in by Zane Norton, Percy Vanacht, Cory Lester, Jack Grady, Nathan Dee and Alec Hanselman.  We saw a very strong Whitfield team and dropped the dual by a score of 60-15.  Zane Norton won an exciting decision by a score of 9-8.

The Eric Lewis Tournament proved to live up to its reputation as one of the toughest in the area. Cory Lester was our lone medalist, earning the silver at 126lbs.

On Wednesday the Bombers took on Maplewood High School and Sullivan High School.  The boys took care of Maplewood by a score of 42-18, and fell to Sullivan 53-19. Alec Hanselman recorded a pin against Maplewood in a decisive victory.  Cory Lester and Solo Ceesay took care of business with impressive wins against Sullivan. In perhaps the most exciting match of the evening, Solo gave up the first takedown of the match and fought hard off his back to get right back to his feet and launch his opponent to his back for the pin. Nathan Dee won by major decision against his Sullivan opponent.

On Thursday, the Bombers hosted Winfield for the last dual meet of the season. The Bombers finished on top 39-22. Cory Lester, Jack Grady, and Nathan Dee dominated their opponents, winning by pin. Zach Lamb recorded a great victory wining by decision 7-4. The Bombers finished the season with a dual meet record of 7-6.

This weekend we had three wrestlers compete in the Westminster JV Tournament.  Zac Norton and AD Marshall both finished with a silver medal, while Will Wolfe brought home the bronze.

This week we host the Metro League Tournament on Saturday, 2/4. Start time is 10 am.  This is the final tournament of the regular season. Next weekend we travel to Mexico, MO for the District tournament.  Go Bombers!!!

Girls’ Varsity Swimming

The Swimmin' Women had two meets this past week, winning one!

Tuesday we swam Incarnate Word and won 103-67. Winners included Amanda Cao in the 200 free, Madison Qualy on the IM and 100 fly, Tess Yost on the 50 free, Libby Yost in the 100 free, and Liz Jackson in the 500 free.

Thursday was a little tougher, where we swam Visitation and lost 113-70. The good thing is we had some really good races. Qualy, in particular, was amazing!  She broke her own school record in the 200 IM, by one full second! Tess Yost swam her best time in the 50 free, and Libby Yost in the 100 free! Liz Jackson also dropped a second in the 500, and Tessa Lach dropped two seconds in the same event! Maggie Lobbig swam her first ever 100 back and did a fine job. So despite the loss, it was still a good meet, and I'm so proud of everyone!
