American Field Service

AFS is an international student exchange program.
Its purpose is to help oversee the hosting process at Burroughs
and increase awareness of AFS programs available to JBS students.
Volunteers act as liaisons between the AFS faculty advisors, the AFS
student and host families, the Burroughs AFS organization, and the
local AFS organization. Volunteers also assist in making the exchange
student’s year memorable by organizing a welcome breakfast in
September, an International Potluck Dinner in February and a farewell
party in June. While
hosting is not required of this committee, hosting opportunities (both
short and long term) are offered to members before being made
available to other JBS families. Seven
to eight meetings are held during the year.
|
| Annual Dinner |
The John Burroughs School Association holds its Annual Dinner &
Meeting in conjunction with the Auction each spring.
This entertaining and informative evening is a great
opportunity to spend time with other JBS parents and faculty.
Volunteers are responsible for invitations, publicity, table
decorations, set-up, entertainment and planning the dinner menu.
|
| Auction |
Every spring, in conjunction with the Annual Dinner & Meeting,
the JBS Parents Council organizes a low-key silent auction.
This event gives volunteers a great opportunity to spend time
with other JBS parents and faculty. Committee members meet
periodically throughout the school year and are responsible for
solicitation of items, publicity, invitations, catalog, set-up,
presentation, and the bank.
|
| Blue & Gold Picnic |
(Sponsored every other year)
Working with the school's food service company, a committee of
approximately four couples plans and serves dinner to the students and
faculty on Friday before the Pep Rally, kicking off the MICDS sports
weekend in the fall. This
is great fun and a wonderful way to begin the weekend with the student
body.
|
| Bookstore |
Volunteers sell books, supplies and cookies to students and faculty
in the Bookstore. Each
volunteer works one 2˝ hour shift per month.
Substitution opportunities are available. Volunteering at the
bookstore provides a great way to meet the kids and feel connected to
what's going on at school.
|
| Cookies |
The entire parent body provides home baked cookies for sale in the
Bookstore throughout the school year.
A parent volunteer from each grade is needed to mail the cookie
schedule and a reminder postcard to each family in that grade one time
during the year. This is a
job that can be done at home.
|
| Family Network |
The purpose of the Family Network (FN) is to promote communication
and the exchange of ideas on adolescence and parenting among JBS
parents. Family Network programs focus on family relationships, teen
development, peer and academic pressures and substance abuse
prevention. Committee
members are responsible for:
Brown Bag Events:
Grade specific presentation and discussion meetings for
parents. Typical speakers
include JBS principals and counselors and outside professionals.
Two parents per class organize two Brown Bags per year.
Book Club:
Parents work with faculty to plan three-four book
presentations/discussions per year.
Health Days:
For 10, 11 and 12th grades.
Parents coordinate with the JBS counseling department to
provide refreshments.
Mentor Program:
Current families are matched with families new to JBS to
provide a personal contact to welcome them, smooth the transition to a
new school and provide information about JBS as needed.
Parent to Parent:
Parents coordinate a fall mailing from FN and the counseling
department and host FN at Night events.
|
| Grade Chairs |
Parents of a boy and a girl from each grade are asked to help
coordinate activities for their respective classes.
Activities will vary depending upon the class represented.
The faculty sponsor and principal for each class will verify
grade specific jobs and help orchestrate these activities.
|
| Hospitality |
This committee provides decorations for a faculty/staff luncheon
held the week before school begins and provides treats for the faculty
once a month throughout the school year.
In the spring, committee members plan & provide food for
the Parents Council luncheon at its Annual Meeting in May.
|
| JB Connection |
Items with the JBS logo are sold at Unique Boutique, select
athletic games, special events and in the bookstore.
Sales-oriented volunteers are always needed and appreciated.
Those interested in school spirit and/or merchandising will
find this a great way to become involved.
|
| jbNet |
This is a one-person job to maintain the “Parents Council” page
on the campus website current. The
chairperson is responsible for adding all Parents Council events to
the Parents Council calendar, as well as updating the page and the
calendar weekly with other upcoming events and volunteer
opportunities. Other
committee chairs are responsible for getting pertinent information to
the Net chairperson. This chairperson must have basic computer skills
(Microsoft Word, Microsoft Windows, the internet, uploading files and
email).
|
| Library |
If you like being surrounded by books, this is the place for you.
The JBS library has an impressive collection of classics, new
books, reference books, and magazines.
The computer facilities for research are state-of-the-art.
As a volunteer you will assist the library staff in a wide
variety of jobs, including processing books, repairing and shelving
books and magazines, computer input, clipping, filing, copying, and
bar-coding. Training is
provided. Volunteers
generally work a two-three hour shift during the school day once a
week or twice a month, but hours are certainly flexible.
|
| Lost and Found |
The purpose of this committee is to organize the Lost & Found
Room and help students reclaim lost or misplaced books, supplies, and
clothing. Volunteers work
from approximately 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. on their assigned mornings,
generally only two a month. Several
"Give Back Days" are held each school year and those require
volunteers, in shifts, to staff the Lost & Found booth from
approximately 7:45 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
|
| Mailing |
The committee usually meets once a month during the school year to
help the Development Office with JBS Newsletter mailings.
Eight to ten volunteers help with each mailing, which usually
takes about an hour. This committee also does some major mailings for
the Family Network Committee, AFS, Unique Boutique and the Parents
Council.
|
| Potpourri |
This long-standing Burroughs tradition brings the JBS community
together and provides the greater St. Louis community with the
opportunity to shop for bargains galore at a 500-family garage sale
held in the spring. Volunteers oversee a variety of committees
including sorting, bake sale, clothing, books, restaurant, cashiers,
raffle, plant sale, etc. In
the week preceding the sale, JBS students experience lots of
fun-filled activities (including daily assembly raffles, snow cones,
and cotton candy to name a few). Time commitments vary considerably.
For most, the greatest commitment will be one week in April -- from
Saturday Move In to the following Saturday Sale Day -- as departments
are set up and Potpourri events occur throughout the week. Leading
up to that week are four
full committee organizational meetings.
Potpourri is a great way to have lots of fun meeting students
and parents, while providing a valuable community service and raising
funds for the school.
|
| Seniors & Seniors Parents Party |
A casual party on campus is organized by 11th
grade parents to honor seniors and their parents during graduation
week. Volunteers start in
late February to plan the theme, send the invitations, and plan the
menu, decorations and special activities for the evenings.
Calling all Class of 2009 (current sophomore parents) party
planners - this is the committee for you!
|
| Student Parties/Activities |
Committee members provide snacks such as Ted Drewes ice cream
during book sale days in August and help organize the Blue & Gold
Dance in the fall. Other
activities may occur throughout the year.
|
| Summer Opportunities Fair |
Each year parents and students at Burroughs, MICDS, and Whitfield
work together to sponsor the Summer Opportunities Fair.
The Fair's location rotates among the three schools; it will be
held at MICDS on January 26, 2008. The purpose of the Fair is to
provide the greater St. Louis community with information about summer
educational, recreational, leadership and volunteer opportunities.
|
| Unique Boutique |
Unique Boutique is held the weekend preceding Thanksgiving.
The event features the sale of items from local, as well as
nationally known artisans. Several
JBS booths (The Cafe; Plants; Signatures; JB Connections; Wrapping;
Incredible Edibles) are coordinated by JBS parents. Chairpersons and
volunteers are needed to help plan and execute the event for many
different areas including decorating, set-up, admissions,
marketing/PR, mailings, crafts, and more.
