Parents Council - Family Network

The purpose of the Family Network, an arm of the Parents Council, is to promote communication and the exchange of ideas on adolescence and parenting. The intent is to provide forums for discussion so relationships may be built or strengthened among parents and between parents and their teenagers. The strength of these connections will support families as their teens make the transition to healthy adulthood.

Family Network programs focus on family relationships, teen development, peer and academic pressures, substance abuse, and topics suggested by the Administration.  The JBS counseling department serves as the Family Network's liaison to the school.

Current subcommittees include: New Parent Mentor Program; Brown Bag Program; Book Club; Parent
to Parent; and Senior, Junior and Sophomore Health Days.

The New Parent Mentor program pairs families new to JBS with a current family to ease the transition to a new school, help them feel welcome and comfortable and address questions about how thing work at JBS.  For more information contact co-chairs Carolyn Gollub and Janet Salk.

Brown Bag/Coffee Connection events are casual meetings organized for each grade level and held over lunch or in the morning. They feature guest speakers who discuss age-appropriate topics and allow parents the opportunity to meet and talk with other parents from their child’s grade.  For more information, contact the grade chairs Shelly Baizer, David Hotaling and Mary Riew for seventh grade, Pam Lester and Dorothy Swicord for eighth grade, Pam Bliss and Kerri Wetzel for ninth grade, Cathy Herman and Leslie Lenz for tenth grade, Tammy & Rob Lamb and Waite Stuhl & Nora Kelleher for eleventh grade, and Marty Chapman and Darlene Davison for twelfth grade.

Book Club provides informal discussions led by parents, teachers and staff on a variety of books including parenting issues, diversity, values, and works of literature.  For the specific book titles and dates of discussion, refer to the Family Network calendar or contact the committee co-chairs Linda Mercer and Diana RothbarthFamily Network also offers a collection of books, tapes, and videos on a wide range of parenting topics.  These are available in the Family Network section of the library.

Parent to Parent addresses issues of family and community concern relating to our children's social lives, and has sought the perspectives of both parents and students with regard to issues of substance use / abuse.  This committee provides relevant information to parents at all grade levels: seventh grade, eighth grade, ninth grade, sophomore, junior, and senior.  For more information, contact co-chairs, Julie Greenspoon-Kelly and Michelle Wexler.

The Family Network's scheduled business meetings and programs are listed on the calendar in the school newsletter. JBS fathers and mothers are invited to attend any or all of these events to discuss issues in a setting in which confidentiality is encouraged. Parents are welcome to communicate their thoughts, questions, and suggestions during the meetings or by directly contacting a Family Network committee member or the Family Network's co-chairs.
