ADMISSIONS PROCESS
The goal of our admissions process is to provide ample opportunity for you to become familiar with Burroughs and for us to get to know you and your family. While there are several ways to achieve this, five required steps are outlined here:
School Visit:
Come and spend a morning with us. You don't need to complete your application. Just come see what it's like to go to Burroughs. You will have the opportunity to tour the campus, see classes in action, and find answers to all of your questions. Dress comfortably; we are an informal school. Call Nancy Vogt, the office assistant, to schedule your visit or to find out more about visiting Burroughs. Student visits begin on Wednesday, October 24th.
Application:
Applications will automatically be mailed in September to those who took our 5th Grade Exploratory test. You may also obtain one by:
Applying on-line by clicking here or
Calling our office to request one or
Obtaining one from an independent elementary school
Please submit your application, including the parents' questionnaire, a week prior to your family interview (see below). All applications are due by January 15, 2008, but you don't need to complete your interview by then.
Family Interview:
We look forward to meeting you and at least one of your parents. The family interview is one way we get to learn more about you, and it also provides your family another opportunity to get to know us better. Nancy Vogt, the office assistant, can schedule your interview at your convenience. Interviews are conducted Monday- Friday, starting November 1st and ending February 1st, and are conducted by one of our faculty members. Remember that we need the application and parents' questionnaire a week prior to your interview.
Testing:
In an effort to minimize the number of tests you take each year, Burroughs accepts the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam). To register for the exam, please visit www.iseetest.org or call 1-800-446-0320. Our office is also happy to provide registration materials or answer any questions.
Burroughs will host the ISEE (for lower, middle and upper levels) on January 12th (register by December 22nd) and January 19th (register by December 29th). To have your scores sent to Burroughs, please fill in school code 260650 when registering. Both exams begin at 9:00 a.m., and you will be given pencils, pens, paper and a snack. For additional dates and locations of the ISEE, please see Admissions Calendar or click here. Burroughs asks applicants to take the test by the end of January.
Recommendations:
Since we want to get to know you as best as we can, we ask for two letters of recommendation. Please ask two people who are well acquainted with your personal qualities to write us. We would like to know how they know you, why they would recommend you, and anything else that you think we should know about you. Please ask your references to mail their letters so that we receive them by February 1st. They can also e-mail them to us at clavigne@jburroughs.org . A response will be sent to each reference to thank and acknowledge our receipt of their letter. These two letters are in addition to the current teacher recommendation (Section C of the Common Application.)
NOTE:
To cover the expense of processing, all applications to Burroughs must be accompanied by a $40.00 admissions fee, and the cost of the ISEE is $78.00 (to be paid directly to ISEE). In most cases of significant financial need, these fees will be waived. Please ask our office about this opportunity.
